The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication of the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
