Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits Following Move Into Fried Chicken.

A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have reached peak pizza while broadening the franchise into fried chicken has been ousted after conflicts with its governing body.

Executive Shake-Up

Andrew Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's seeks a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to shift Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, commenting recently there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed chicken was the most rapidly expanding food category in the international market.

Board Friction

It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the governance team over his approach and direction, although the company's release said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.

Recent Product Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.

While the business is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as planned, it regards chicken products as complementary to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

The Domino's chair, the company chair, commented: “The board believes that there are a series of prospects to drive further growth and value creation in our primary operations. We are prioritizing finding the ideal CEO to direct the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Market Difficulties

Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said transactions declined by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In August, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in six-month income.

Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the shutting of multiple locations a month ago, after the business behind its UK venues fell into administration.

Health Efforts

Responding to customer preferences towards balanced diets, Domino's has rolled out lower-calorie options, such as its thin-crust range of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Management

The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the CEO position long-term.

She commented: “We have a multiple ongoing growth and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to implementing at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the company's logistics network and product development, and its customer retention initiative.

The pizza chain is also without a long-term chief financial officer until the spring, when a new appointee comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. For now, Richard Snow is interim finance chief.
