Explosion Takes 3 Police Officers During Eviction Operation in Italy
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and another man who escaped after the incident was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to hospital.
The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the property left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the residence was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He believed the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told local news, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had died in the line of duty.
