At least 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
